How to perform 'normal'
Did you know that neurotypicality is just the performance of societal expectations? Many neurodivergent people could pass for neurotypical, if we just try hard enough to blend in, to assimilate ourselves into dominant societal ideas of normal, and try hard enough to look like we are not in distress but enjoying it just the right amount.
Why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose but your sense of self, your mental wellbeing, your self-esteem, your energy, your creativity, genuine connection, joy... (what have I missed, by brain is tired). I should know, I attempted (badly) this performance of normal for 42 years.
Image description: Slide with black background shows a still from The Good Place with the character Eleanor Shellstrop (a pretty blonde white woman). Eleanor is at a house party, head cocked to one side, wry smile, holding a glass of red wine in one hand, the other hand is on her hip. She wears a black sleeveless dress, sparkly tiara, and a sash that says Normal Person. Title in gold text says How to perform 'normal'. Text boxes say: mask, be a social chameleon, do the right body language, make good eye contact, make small talk but do not overdo it, don't overshare, don't be awkward, join in all the conversations, relate but don't make it all about you, know when to shut up, avoid stimming, look like you are having fun, mingle, do not be the first to leave, @AusomeCharlie
