Double Rainbow, Double the Misunderstanding
Why are so many neurodivergent people also LGBTQIA+ and vice versa?
As someone who is proudly both, let me be clear: it’s not a coincidence.
📊 Research backs it up:
Autistic people are up to 60x more likely to be gender-diverse, and over 3x more likely to be LGB+ (Maggio et al., 2022)
Gender-diverse Autistic people are often diagnosed later, missing crucial support (McQuaid et al., 2024)
We face higher rates of trauma, discrimination, and mental health struggles — not because we’re queer or neurodivergent, but because the world isn’t built for us (Voltaire et al., 2024; Strang et al., 2023; White et al., 2024)
📌 This is minority stress in action. When you live at the intersection of neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ identity — the double rainbow — you're navigating multiple systems that don't fully see or support you.
💬 What do we need? Not “awareness”; we need accessible, inclusive, affirming spaces – in healthcare, workplaces, education, even at Pride events.

I often deliver this talk as a 'lunch and learn', in-person or online, usually booked by corporate Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) such as Neurodiversity, Disability, or LGBTQIA+ Pride ERGs.

Happy Pride Month 🌈🌈
I live in Michigan. Yesterday I had the opportunity to talk with a 9 year old neurodivergent, non-binary girl. We were staying at the same motel and unlike most people she walked right up and started talking to my 2 pit mix dogs and asked if she could pet them. We stood outside talking for at least an hour. She brought me up to date on the flags as well as some lingo and gave me advice for my 40 year old gay married son.
We’re friends on fb now. She made my day! Brilliant. Soft spoken. WELL spoken for sure. So emotionally intelligent! At 9! Amazing. Thanks for sharing your double rainbow information. I hope awareness changes some hearts and minds and helps people just love others a little bit more. 🫶🏻
Wait. Really?
So many reasons I wish I were born 40 years or so later.
